This activity is great for increasing cardiovascular fitness and basic sport skills!

CLASS SET-UP
The class is divided into teams of three players. Each team is provided a hula hoop and three small-medium sized balls suitable for catching and throwing. The teams spread out on the gym floor and place their hula hoop within the basketball court area. The three balls are also place inside the hoops as shown.

HOW TO PLAY
This activity is played as a progressive activity with four different stages as described below.

STAGE #1 “WARM-UP”
On the teacher’s signal (perhaps using music), all of the players (Runners) on each team are challenged to leave their”Home Hoop” and gather balls from other teams’ hoops. This is done by running to a hoop, taking one ball, and returning the ball to the team’s “Home Hoop.”

Rules:

  • Only one ball may be taken at a time,
  • All balls must be carried back to the Home Hoop, no throwing, kicking, etc.
  • No guarding or intercepting balls.

After 2-3 minutes, the teacher signals for the teams to stop and return to their Home Hoop.  The teacher leads the class in a short discussion of good strategies for this stage. Afterwards, the balls are redistributed so that each team has three balls inside their hoop for Stage #2.

STAGE #2 “ADD A CATCHER”
In this stage, one player is the designated “Catcher” and stands with one foot inside the Home Hoop. The two other players (Runners) run to a hoop and throw a ball to the Catcher. If the ball is caught, it is placed inside the Home Hoop. If it is not, it is a loose ball and placed outside the hoop.

Rules

  • Once a ball is taken and thrown, the Runner must move to a new hoop.
  • No guarding or intercepting balls.

After 2-3 minutes, the teacher signals for the teams to stop and return to their Home Hoop. The teacher leads a short discussion and balls are redistributed before moving to Stage #3.

STAGE #3 “SIDELINE PLAYERS”
In this stage, there is the Catcher, the Runner, and a Sideline Player. The Side line Player stands outside of the basketball court, near his team’s Home Hoop as shown. Teams may move their Home Hoops as needed for this stage.

Rules:

  • In this stage, the Runner must throw the ball to the Sideline Player.
  • The Sideline Player will throw the ball to the Catcher.
  • The Sideline Player may move along the sideline to catch and then throw a ball to the Catcher.
  • No guarding or intercepting balls.

STAGE #4 “GUARDING”
In this stage, there is the Catcher, the Runner, and a Sideline Player. In this stage, players may guard and intercept balls. This essentially provides all of the basic offensive and defensive skills commonly found in most team sports such as soccer, football, Ultimate Frisbee, etc.

Rules:

  • In this stage, the Runner must throw the ball to the Sideline Player.
  • The Sideline Player will throw the ball to the Catcher.
  • The Sideline Player may move along the sideline to catch and then throw a ball to the Catcher.
  • Any player may guard or intercept balls.
