This K-2 game was submitted by Phyllis Coats, Alma, Arkansas.
Equipment: Hula hoop for each student and Christmas music
Objective: Spatial awareness, locomotor movements and a fun aerobic workout
Directions: Everyone gets a hoop and stands anywhere in the gym or other area. Area size depends on the number of children, who should be able to move freely. Students pretend they are Santa in his sleigh, traveling the world as they move throughout the area holding the hoops at their waists.
On your signal, the students stop, drop their hoops (sleighs) to the floor and “land on a house.” They bend down, knees bent, and touch the floor in a squat position (going down the chimney). Students then stand and do 10 toe touches, reaching in the air and then touching toes (putting presents under the tree). Anytime during the game after toe touches, act like you are Santa eating cookies and finish with a big “HO, HO, HO!” Students begin to travel again by a designated movement (skip, gallop, run, walk). It might be late in the night and Santa needs for you to hurry, so run. Or he is tired, so walk, etc.
