AnnaMae Dunn from Akron, Ohio submitted this new and challenging way to warm-up! 1-4
Background: Looking for a new and challenging way to “warm-up?” Try letter calisthenics!
How We Do It:The teacher will think of several words that are grade appropriate for the students that relate to physical education (i.e., jump, slide, etc.). The students are challenged to perform jumping jacks to spell out the words. They do so in the following manner: (1) If the letter is “tall,” (i.e., b, d, f, h, k, l, and t), the students do a jumping jack by raising his hands above their heads. (2) If the letter is “regular,” (i.e., a, c, e, i, m, n, o, s, u, v, w, x, and z), the hands are raised to shoulder level. (3) If the letter has a “tail,” (q, j, p, q, and y), the student raises the hands to hip level.
For Example: Volleyball is shown above. Additional words may include: parachute, Frisbee, racquet, soccer, basketball, football, and tennis.
Variation: Have the students jump and clap their hands as each letter is shouted aloud.
