This is a good idea for grades K-5.

At Midway Elementary School all of the teachers have implemented a school-wide character education program. We use “Core Values” and have a different value every month. In September, it was “Responsibility.” In order to reinforce this value in Physical Education class, we implemented the concept of “Gym Jobs.” In our class we had four basic jobs – Gym Inspector, Bathroom Monitors, Equipment Manager, and Point Keeper.

Each job has specific duties and qualifications. Interested students have to fill-out the application form and return it on time. We keep all of the applications and choose new “employees” every 6 weeks. They not only experience filling out a job application, but they learn to act responsibly as they do their jobs. It is amazing to see how seriously they take their positions. Here is a short description of our “Gym Jobs.”

Gym Inspector: Inspects the gym after his class has lined up to leave. Picks up coats or items that are left. (Sometimes our “lost and found” is large enough to clothe a small army!)

Point Keeper: Keeps score during some activities, counts the number of students in class for grouping, and other activities involving numbers.

Equipment Manager: Helps with equipment when needed. This person is usually my “right-hand man,” particularly during my first and last class.

Bathroom Monitors: Checks the bathroom immediately after class to make sure his class kept it tidy, and if toilet paper or towels are needed. We choose a boy and a girl for each class.
