A great Field Day for grades K-5 based on a “careers” theme.
Submitted by Judy Rawlins and Lynda Morris, Appling, Georgia.

Last year we designed a fun “Careers in the Community Field Day.

Players Earn Points: The classes were divided into two teams (12-16 players per team) and rotated through the ten activity stations. Two teams were assigned to a station at a time.

Each team was given a score card. Parents and/or teachers helped to facilitate the stations and acted as supervisors for each group of students.

As the teams earned points, the parent or teacher wrote the points on the team’s scorecard. Teams earning 100 or more points were given a certificate at the end of the Field Day. Of course, all of the students received a certificate!

12-15 Minutes Per Station:The students were given about 12-15 minutes before they rotated to the next station. You can use a P.A. system to signal when the time limit is up and direct the students to the next station. Here’s a quick run-down of the stations we used:

Station #1: PIZZA MAKER

Equipment: 2 buckets and 2 sets of poly spots (example: red and blue)

Players: Team competition as entire group

Object: To score points by throwing the “pizzas” in the bucket.

Rules: All team members will stand behind the line holding pizzas (poly spots). On a signal, everyone will release the pizzas. All pizzas landing in bucket will score 1 point. Quickly retrieve pizzas and repeat until time to rotate. Scoring: 1 point per pizza in bucket.

Station #2: RESCUE WORKER

Equipment: 2 rubber ducks, 2 buckets, 2 hurdles, 2 balance beams, 2 hula hoops with yarn “flames” attached to a chair

Players: Team relay

Object: To rescue the rubber duck.

Rules: Teams are in relay formation. The first person completes the obstacle course (must squeak rubber duck) and returns to tag next team member. Each team member takes a turn. Points: 10 points for finishing first, 5 points for finishing second. Perform the relay as often as time permits.

Station #3: WAITRESS/WAITER

Equipment: 2 serving trays, lots of forks, spoons, knives, plates, cups

Players: Team relay

Object: To finish relay with more “stuff” on your tray than the other team.

He then returns to the team and passes the tray to the next team member, who repeats the relay. Continue until time is called or all items are removed from table. An item that drops from tray will be returned to the table by an event leader. Points: l point for each item on tray.

Station #4: FARMER

Players: Team competition

Object: To shell the most peanuts or beans.

The last player quickly runs to the front of the line, dips the test tube in the bucket, as the relay continues. Points: 10 points for the beaker with the most solution, 5 points for 2nd place.
