A basketball dribbling drill/game for grades 4-8.
Submitted by Mark Croson, Virginia.
Here’s a neat lead-up activity for basketball. You may want to divide your students by ability groups for this activity.
Divide the class into groups of six players and assign the group to a designated playing area. One student in each group is the “Ball Bandit.”
The other students are given a basketball or playground ball. The students are instructed to concentrate on good dribbling techniques and strategies needed for defending their ball from an opponent (i.e. shielding the ball with the body).
The “Ball Bandit” will try to make a good steal from a player in his or her group.
If successful, the two players switch places.
Play rounds of 2-3 minutes.
